Reet, I might as well ask this question here as it bugs me all the time.

Where in Win2k are the window size and locations stored? What determines the size and location of a new internet explorer window, and how the feck to I set defaults? I've tried opening up new windows, holding down shift, ctrl alt etc when closing. Opening new windows, resizing, closing down parent window then file -> exit etc, but nothing ever works.

What's the proper combination to set defaults?

If you open a folder and click Tools>Folder Options>View, scroll down and check the box next to "Remember each folder's view settings", click apply and then click "apply to all folders" this will tell explorer to remember the position of any window when you close it. So.. theoretically.. when you open IE up now you should be able to move it around, close it and when you next open it it will open in the position you moved it to.

but its Windows, so it usually arses up :P

Buy a Mac, no settings it just remembers each windows setting for you as you left it.

Whoa! - Big laughs all round.

First here with all the hot news. Do tell Ref when he shows up.

P.S. Thanks for doing this column Larchyman, I know it'll be handy for almost everyone.

I've got that set larchy, but it doesnt always work.

I'll be browsing some webshite and I might need to open up a link in a fresh window, and rearrange it so I can maybe copy some text (in an image) to notepad or something. When I open a new window, it remembers the small window previously and I cant fucking fix it. I've tried all kindsa methods and orders to set the size, but it wont cooperate.

I've temporarily solved this problem by using a different browser, but I'd still like to know.

Oh that problem. It remembers the last window opened size. So if you're going to do that, open two, resize one. When you're done, close the small one then the big one. Should fix it.

I tried looking for some reg entries, but couldn't find any.. I don't think its as simple as the V/H being stored in a key somewhere... which really there should be.

In 98 you had to do what I said above to fix this. I assume there's a variable somewhere which IE changes to remember the last closed window state. But it's not accessible. Because making it easy to find would be stupid.
