Now that 8.1 is out and it's possible to ditch the Metro interface and return to the classic Desktop/Start bar, I thought i'd see what's what. Toying with the idea of upgrading.

Well, the compatibility wizard threw up some shockers. There are, okay, some old programs, but some are fairly/recent like Crysis 3, Poker Stars 2, punkbuster (which would render some games inoperable), LFD2 (which can be considered new as it's constantly being updated).

Really M$ after all this time ? I just noticed the upgrade cost for Win 8.1 Pro is £189. F*CK THAT.

Windows 8.1 is pretty good on tablet. Not sure about how it would work for Desktop, im not convinced it would work too well. It is all very well integrated with lots of little features that you only notice as being useful until you don't have them, the sacrifice being that you have to use a MS Outlook account to log in. Probably not worth nearly £200 though.

It is possible to get Punkbuster working on 8 and 8.1. You just need to download the PBupdate tool and tell it where all your PB using games are installed and that should sort it out.
