there's been a bit of talk about destroying your old HDDs effectively so that people can't steal your Lolinternet forum passwords etc...

I have a few drives that need smashing and was thinking about whether I could be bothered doing the proper erasing of them to put 1s and 0s on them all... quick question though... anyone know how hard it would be to retreive data from a mechanical drive (i.e. not SSD) if i'd decided to destroy it by submerging it in a bath of salty water for a few days?

Easier way is to get a screwdriver and remove the circuit board from the bottom side of the drive, then break it and chuck it away. Unless someone can find the exact board with the exact firmware for your exact drive model then nothing will be accessible unless they take apart the drive in a protective environment and read the platters direct. If that is a concern (OMG FBI WANT MY FORUM PASSWORD SO BAD) then spend another 30 seconds with the screwdriver and open up the drive unit. If you're feeling destructive, drill through the platters.

Tbh just smash the controller board.

Water dries out.
