So my dad bought a new Belkin router to replace his BT one, it all seems to be fine except when he tries to log in to his BT broadband it will not accept the username and password, it keeps saying they're wrong. The same details work perfectly on his BT modem though. He's tried 3 different modems now, same result, only the BT one accepts his broadband username and password (and it definitely is his ISP login he's entering, not something else).

Any idea what might cause this?

Has the Belkin router had it's ADSL settings set to EXACTLY the same as the BT one ?

Check to see if BT only accept a combination of username / password and MAC address of the router. That may be a possible reason and like Cacker intimates there are also a myriad of settings that can differ - including login protocols.

Unfortunately I can't check myself as he lives hundreds of miles away (because of course I have a clue), was just hoping there something obvious that noobs always do wrong. BT refuse to help him as it's not their router, Belkin did help (even replaced the router) but said he needed help from BT... :|

I'll tell him to look into the mac address suggestion, thanks.

I'm betting there are interweb forums, probably on the interweb, where these kinds of things are discussed. I'm betting BT themselves run one, I know Sky, Talk Talk etc. do and you can usually find insider help on there, possibly even get somebody to help unofficially as it were.

This is what I'm thinking about.

I'd tried a number of forums but not that one, have directed the old geezer to post something there. Cheers.
