and by gaming, I mean diablo 3 and otehr mmo play, not fps these days.

ie. is there really much point in spending 60+ sheets on a mechanical gaming keybaord like the razer blackwidow or steelseries 6G?

and yes, my wife has been bugging for something she can get me for christmas, and the ipad hints have been falling on deaf ears.

I've got the logitech wave... it's not got many bells/whistles but it has some nice ones and is fantastically comfortable

I spent ages looking into a mechanical keyboard and decided to hold off until more hit the streets and some prices drop.

The Blackwidow looks great but my big worry is the keys will wear away like my Tarantula did. Razer wouldn't sell replacement keys :(

Also for mmo stuff I think the cherry brown mx switches would be better but not many out as yet. You can order a cherry brown mx switch version of the Blackwidow direct from Razer.

What exactly is the "mechanical" prefix supposed to mean, aside from the normal "mechanicals" that all keyboards that are not made of light use?

That each key has a mechanical switch, as opposed to the more common dome, capacitative or scissor switches.

There's a general perception that mechanically switched keyboards are superior, and this is used as a differentiator for niche oems to upsell a more expensive product to the enthusiast market.

Whether you would actually prefer them or not... YMMV. Personally I fucking hate them.
