Intel has been slow for a long while, to the point that their latest offerings are using the same Marvell controller that Crucial used in the C300 because their own controller has been left behind.

Crucial M4s were the reliable option, but last month even they had a firmware BSOD bug rectified. Personally I'd still prefer them over most other offerings.

The sandforce drives are often a better choice for Macs because they don't use TRIM, and while Apple enabled TRIM in the latest versions of OSX it's still very sketchy.

Tbh the newer Samsung drives, often overlooked because they don't top the performance standings, are very solid offerings.

Given that the difference between the bottom and top end of ssd performance is relatively small compared to the vast gulf between ssds and a normal harddrive I wouldn't really worry too much about the performance figures.... anything recent is going to be good.

The latest OCZ indilinx drives are very good too... on paper... but they're OCZ, so just remembering everything you need is a more reliable form of data storage.

OCZ = Alfa Romeos...

if you want to get somewhere fast they work and they're cheap... however if you need to make sure that you will always get to your destination then you'd be insane to choose em

Intel Sandforce drive... costs more, but 5yr warranty and it's Intel so it will be properly tested. Big price premium though. The samsungs on the above like look like by far the best options at the moment.

we still hate OCZ for SSDs, right?

just saw this with £45 off and thought it didn't look bad for the speeds quoted / £115 for 120GB

they're hit and miss... I think that's probably the worst thing about them - the inconsistency. Either they work and are as good as (or better than) the competition, or they are an expensive paperweight.

I've only bought one and it was a paperweight. (Brand new out of the box)

**FAGIN... do you agree with my assesment that you NEED an SSD now or was it an expensive luxury? **

It's beautiful. It just makes me a bit unhappy that over the weekend I'll pop the old disc back in for storage and the applications/games that won't fit on the SSD, and those will feel so slow in comparison.

Fair enough, consider myself schooled.

Is it worth having these on a work box at all, or in that setting is it just a luxury item? I've heard they're more suited to laptops too because fast boot means you use less battery etc. Just curious like!

Aye I was all for getting a 128 GB SSD on a couple of new machines, apparently 500GB SATA is the wiser choice though. Bum.

Edit - also we tend to encourage storing stuff on the network as it's automatically backed up every night; don't really need heaps of space on a local machine. Darnit!

My two year old OCZ Vertex2 240GB gave up on me last week with a lovely burning smell, shipped it off to Holland and had a new one on my desk in 5 days.

Bought a 120GB Samsung 830 to use as my boot drive while it was away so now i have 3 SSD, two of which are OCZ (Vertex 2 and Vertex3) and the samsung which is pure sex.

Good returns on the OCZ anyway.
