A friend has given me his XP laptop to fix. It's got all sorts of problems I'm thinking there's been something pretty catastrophic gone wrong. It won't boot at all and is giving all sorts of error messages. I can't even get to the command line to format the thing. I'm thinking I need to make some sort of Windows XP recovery CD. Yes, I have googled for it and had a good scout around, but it is tricky to sift through all the information and hard to know what to trust. Recommendations are far more useful. If anyone has any suggestions that would be most appreciated, thanks muchly.

"XP Recovery CD" = "XP CD"

Home, Professional or Professional VLK?

Guessing it's probably Home, and you can grab an SP3 ISO of it here! (yes that's a proper one, not some screwy pirate one)

It's Windows XP media Center, and I have the key for it. Huzzah! Cheers for the link I'll give that a go. Should hopefully be fairly straightforward I hope, and certainly more so than the route I was going down - at the mo I've downloaded a program called PE Builder and am setting about building a recovery CD. Hassle.

MCE is a different edition altogether, the above ISO won't work with his product key.

Try this one instead.

Great thanks for your help larch. I think I was over-complicating things to start with!

No worries, hope that's the right version.
