They've announced the new 7D and 1D mkIV. At about four and a half grand for the latter I'm ignoring it :P

The 7D at £1700 looks interesting though...

- 18 megapixels
- 8fps continuous shooting
- dual axis level indicator (pitch and roll)
- HD video at 720 @ 1080p at variable frame rates.
- Dual Digic IV processors
- APS-C (1.6 crop)
- part weather sealed (same as 5D II)
- 19 AF points and a new AF system
- built in wireless flash control
- 100% viewfinder coverage

It's gorra lorra new technology...
new image sensor, new AF system, new metering system, new electronic level, new viewfinder display technology, new wireless TTL controller functionality and new configuration and customization options not found in any Canon camera previously

Looks like a good sports/wildlife shooter meaning Canon now have a direct competitor for the Nikon D300/D300s (which are notably a generation older). The jury is still out on noise as far as I can tell, the general consensus is that it falls somwhere between a 50D and 5D mk2 for low light performance. Seems it's OK up to ISO 1600, but loses out a bit beyond that. Of course you may need an expensive memory card to get the full fps benefit.

Good post here on where this camera sits in the Canon range
Canon clearly states the 7D is a mid-range camera.

Canon does not group their camera lines by sensor size. It starts at the bottom with the xxxxD's, then the xxxD's. Those are entry-level (Rebels). Next are the consumer, or pro-sumer, cameras, xxD's. From here, we split into two applications: best image quality, for portraiture and landscape, and fast cameras for sports and wildlife. In the former application, we have the semi-professional 5D and 5D MkII (5D series), followed by the 1Ds series, top of the line, fully professional cameras. In the latter application, we used to have only the pro-grade 1D series, and the gap has now been filled with the semi-pro 7D. The 7D is not mean to be a fully professional camera.

This gives folks who've been steadily marching along with 20Ds, 30Ds (and heck, even Rebels) and who maybe have a good collection of EF-S lenses a big, big leg up in terms of features and performance.

If this were a full frame camera I would be seriously tempted (though it would also be 3x the price!), hell I am anyway!

Thanks for the heads up m8, hadn't seen the 7D.

For me, if I was buying right now, the killer is, as you mention, that Canon's noise performance is so poor at what are becoming relatively moderate ISOs. The D700 is the elephant in the room here, with a 6400 ISO equivalent in noise to Canon's 400 and a full frame sensor for the same money (albeit fewer pixels... but that with the bigger sensor is a big part of why the noise is so much better too).

This is acceptable since the D700 is waterproof. Also cleans your car, does washing up, feeds cat etc.

Here are a couple of comparison shots taken from the same position, with the same lens, same focus/settings etc, first is the D300, second the D700

What? How would you take photos of the camera ... hold a mirror in front of it?

That's your only concern with marrying a camera?

I was thinking more the relatives in attendance, but this could all get very surreal...

I must say I prefer the drainpipes in the first one.

What?
