Another vote for Lightroom 2 here, superb bit of software. It's got a short but sharp learning curve, but once over the initial bump it's plain sailing. I think you can get a 30 day trial too.
I think Aperture is the main competition for Lightroom, you should note that these are photography workflow programs and can't do the heavy image editing that photoshop can. You won't find paintbrushes and shape drawing tools in Lightroom, but unless you're looking to do things like replace sky lines or paint your cat pink, then Lightroom/Aperture are for you.
