Just wondering if anyone knows of any websites where I can play poker just against software so I can learn the ropes? I've tried places like mousebreaker and miniclip, though googling for 'online poker' is not exactly helpful.

Anyone know of any free web based poker software type games out there (so I can play in work time without installing software :) )? I don't particularly want to have to sign up or anything, just play occasionally and as randomly as I like.

Most if not all the poker sites have play money sections where you can learn the ropes using play money. You do have to sign up, but it costs you nothing.

http://www.pokerroom.com has a web based client as well. Thats the site most of us here started out with.

There are a few poker games flying about but as you say, finding them with google is a little difficult :D
