It is. I wish I'd plumped for pre-order so I could colour up my squaddies.

Well I've put quite a few hours into it now and I'm starting to see the gold foil come off it showing the console retardation of the great dumbening* down fiasco of 2005 return.
Let me preface this by saying it is a good game however if like me you loved the crushing difficulty fear of always being the underdog this is not the X-com game you're looking for.
What I miss from X-Com and isn't in XCom.
Equipment - so I have 4(5 with a perk) inventory slots one for main weapon, one for a pistol, one for armour and one(or two) for extra stuff. Where Is my option to load up my 15 newbies with 40 grenades each and send them happily in and see who comes out alive.
Squad - limited to 6 guys...meh
Landing craft - Doesn't exist, remember those missions that went to shit and you where trying to evac with what ever kit/aliens/unconscious buds you could carry before those Etherals/Crysalsseseseseses decided to show you just how insignificant your best team really was.....well you'll never see it again.
100 shot down UFOs and only one SkyRanger.....yeah not a problem as you'll be lucky to see 1 UFO a month plus when there's a choice of terror missions its pick one of three and the other two just disappear (plus the reward is pointless as 9 times out of 10 you pick the one with the highest panic level)
Stats - There are none for your soldiers, wan't to see them progress its down to picking one of two perks per level and guess what you can end up with 99 Colonels unlike the original which you ranked up based on how much cannon fodder you had you know like how Ranks are supposed to work plus their 'Class' is random when they go from Rookie to Squadie so there's no need to think "hey this guys has ace shooty shooty skill he can be my Sniper and this guy has awesome boom boom skills he can be my Human Bomb"
Also good luck making a rookie as 'You' and seeing how far they get as they get a random country assigned and as with most things these days most of my guys seem to be from India or Poland although if there's one thing I agree with outsourcing its dying in horrific ways to Alien invaders, not had a single Englishman, closest I came was a Scot and we all know that's like saying a Giraffe is close to a Lamborghini.
Engineers/Scientists seem to not be an issue as you get them out he wazoo and you don't need living quarters for them
unfortunately Money seems to be a problem for the world...hey I'm saving the world from Aliens, what's that USA? you're going to pay me £150 a month to save the world urm ooooookay......good job my guys cost like £10 each and don't need wages and fuck yeah I can build a ray gun for £14. P.S. if you want to buy some sweet sweet Alien meats from me on the black market...sorry Grey market (HAHAH I SEE WHAT YO DID THERE) they will only cost you a fiver.

There are a load of good points and if you buy it you'll enjoy it but I just wanted to point out that's if you're a psychotic X-com fan who instead of having sex was virtually saving the world from little Alien sprites and hoping that you din't get a base invasion this month because all your best dudes where still healing up after taking out one of theirs (oh btw no alien bases except the story ones so far but that may change and I'm pretty sure you won't get invaded unless its a story mission either because you only have one fekking base)

P.S. Dishonoured is bloody amazing and If I told you there where only 9 missions youd think I was retarded but the first one took me 4-5 hours to complete!!! Also name me one other game where you can possess a Fish.

*Yes I know that's not a real word

I didn't need convincing that it was proper good, but...

YOU CAN POSSESS A FISH?

If I didn't have it already, I'd have bought it now.

Holy fucking shit.

It's not the XCOM I grew pubes with, but it's still an engrossing, enjoyable, value-for-money game. Nothing can recreate the pain I went through when I lost Cindy Crawford, my best, sexiest, sturdiest, manliest(?!) sniper ever, but fuck snakes, this game comes closer than anything since.

edit to add
It's the first game I've completed since Vietcong, which came out in 45BC. That includes Fallout/New Vegas, the HL episodes, Deus Ex 3, Max Payne 3 and a shitload of really good games in the last 7 years that I cant even begin to remember - I have a crappy attention span so that's gotta count for something?

I didn't say it was a bad game, I didn't even say I didn't enjoy it (quite the opposite) its just not the X-com I personally was hoping for and you have to admit it is a dumbed down (If I worked in marketing I'd say 'More accessible') X-com game, especially considering its made by 'X-com fans' for X-com fans.

The move and shoot/lack of different shots instead of TU's also irritates me a little especially as they give the aliens that little animation and extra turn when they get spotted EVEN if they just wandered into your LOS (where's my extra move when I get seen???) It removes a lot of those long planned ambushes or offensives that when pulled off you went away and knocked one out without needing a copy of Loaded propped open in the toilet. The combat really isn't that tactical or difficult move once to cover hit overwatch and you're pretty much there for 99.9% of fights because of the 1 move then a shoot or second move mechanic over TU's means you only really have two choices per turn instead of "hmm I could take 3 snap shots at x% CtH or two auto shots an y% or move and take 1 snapshot at x+z% or............."

I think its only fair that people who loved X-com get to see some of the things that they may be expecting that are missing because you know all those little things are actually what made X-com games and why they are so revered, also I enjoyed Apocalypse as well and that was a different beast to UFO/TFTD and I still enjoyed it because it maintained some of the hooks of the originals that this lacks.

I've got a major love/hate thing going on with XCOM at the moment and I fully agree with what Twis says.

'Accessibility' aside, the AI fucking skanks you at every opportunity. I've lost count of the amount of times snipers have missed 100% shots, while a thin man can seemingly one-shot a guy in cover from across the map. The free turn bullshit is annoying as hell too.

I started playing the game on classic/ironman and I've restarted a couple of times due to the AI blatantly taking the piss. Sure, the game plays slightly differently than the originals, but there have been so many times I've raged after watching the AI pull something out of the hat that looks like it was scripted by Michael Bay. It seemed like I got through the 'oh fuck' early stages of the game through luck rather than a sound strategy. So fuck XCOM and its sequential seeding.

That said, it does have the old XCOM magic and it does pull you in with it's atmosphere, and when you hit the latter stages of the game and you're blaster launcher raping everything in sight theres a definite feeling of accomplishment. I just wish the game had a little more depth. And more battleships.

I'm enjoying XCOM a lot, I wasn't a rabid fan of the early ones as I don't really remember them (though I remember similar, earlier games) but I have played a couple of the X-Com's recently when they were cheap on steam.

Oh also in case you haven't noticed Sleeping Dogs is 50% off steam for the next few days which is defiantly worth the £15.

I agree with what you said twis, it's nowhere near hardcore as the original XCOM. Games today arent anywhere near as anal as the classics, but they can still make enjoyable games.
